About Us
Who is or are the White Elephant Writers' Group? Nothing exciting, I'm afraid, just a group of writers on Tyneside who got together to share their common love of the written word, to share ideas, to give each other critical feedback and to generally natter about books and writing. Our primary focus is fiction, but quite a few of us are happy to turn our hands to poetry, too.
The nucleus of the group is formed from members of the same tutor group on the Open University course, Advanced Creative Writing, together with friends and partners. We meet monthly, and at the moment are just settling into the formative stages of our group. We hope to have work to share with you over the coming months but at the moment are concentrating on getting going.
The name? Well, that goes back to a day school we had when our tutor said, 'now close your eyes for a minute, and think about white elephants.' We did, had a lively discussion. Then she said, 'now close your eyes and think of everything else but!' A couple of days later we had the inaugural meeting of the group and someone said, 'what shall we call ouselves?'. Becky said, 'White Elephant Writers' Group.' Verdict? Unanimous!
