Blood Moon

by Derick Wilcox

Blood Moon - A Villanelle

The blood-red moon is heavy in the sky,
bleak winds begin to chill the heart-sick soul
and evil's tongue gives voice to evil's cry

The horde comes nearer, voices raising high;
a sound that terrifies, makes blood run cold.
The blood-red moon is heavy in the sky

Wild howling of the pack is drawing nigh,
the night is darker than a God-lost soul
and evil's tongue gives voice to evil's cry

The hunted flee, the hunters follow, fly
on wings of night, to rend the prey their goal
The blood-red moon is heavy in the sky

Black hunters close on prey too tired to try
to flee, escape to safety's urgent call,
and evil's tongue gives voice to evil's cry

The night is done, the savage demons fly
back to the dark recesses of the soul.
The blood-red moon is heavy in the sky
and evil's tongue gives voice to evil's cry
